What Is the IBEW Aptitude Test?

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) requires applicants to its Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) programs to pass an aptitude test before being considered for an apprenticeship position. This test evaluates whether candidates have the mathematical and reading reasoning ability to succeed in the 5-year apprenticeship program.

The test is administered by NJATC (National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee) and is formally called the IBEW/NJATC Aptitude Test. Passing it is typically the first major hurdle to becoming a union electrician.

What Is on the Test?

The test has two sections:

1. Algebra and Functions (33 questions, 46 minutes)

This section tests your ability to solve algebraic equations, work with functions, and apply mathematical reasoning. Topics include:

  • Solving linear equations and inequalities
  • Working with fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Basic geometry (area, perimeter, volume)
  • Reading and interpreting graphs and tables
  • Ratio and proportion problems
  • Powers, roots, and scientific notation

2. Reading Comprehension (36 questions, 51 minutes)

This section presents passages on technical and general topics, followed by questions about the content. It tests whether you can extract information, make inferences, and understand vocabulary in context.

How Is It Scored?

Each section is scored separately. You need a minimum score of 4 out of 9 on each section to pass. Your total score is used to rank you among other applicants — the highest scorers get apprenticeship offers first. A perfect score (9/9 on both sections) puts you at the top of the list.

Unlike licensing exams, this is a competitive process — passing is not enough if other applicants score higher than you. You should aim for the highest possible score, not just the minimum.

How Long Is the Test Valid?

IBEW aptitude test scores are typically valid for one year. If you don't receive an apprenticeship offer within that period, you may need to retake the test. Retake policies vary by local union.

How to Prepare

For the math section:

  • Review pre-algebra and algebra fundamentals — especially solving for x in multi-step equations
  • Practice fraction and decimal arithmetic until it is fast and automatic
  • Work through geometry problems involving area and volume (useful on the job too)
  • Use Khan Academy's free algebra courses for structured practice

For the reading section:

  • Read technical articles, trade magazines, and IBEW materials regularly
  • Practice identifying the main idea vs. supporting details in paragraphs
  • Work through reading comprehension practice tests from ACT/SAT prep materials

General tips:

  • Take timed practice tests to build speed — many candidates know the material but run out of time

Other Requirements for IBEW Apprenticeship

The aptitude test is one of several requirements. Most locals also require a high school diploma or GED, proof of physical ability to perform electrical work, and a personal interview. Some locals give preference to applicants with prior electrical experience or a vocational diploma.
